To block Pinterest on a Mac, add pinterest.com, www.pinterest.com and the country hostname you land on (for example uk.pinterest.com) to the hosts file and flush the DNS cache, because pinterest.co.uk, pinterest.de and other country domains redirect to country subdomains of pinterest.com. For a no-Terminal block use Apple Screen Time. To block Pinterest only while you work, use a focus app such as Nudge, which blocks the websites you pick during a session in Safari and Chrome.

Does Pinterest have a Mac app you need to block?

The Pinterest listing in the App Store shows versions for iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision, and none for Mac. On a Mac, Pinterest is the website, so blocking pinterest.com in your browsers is the whole job.

Which Pinterest domains do you need to block?

Pinterest runs country versions. Requests to country domains such as pinterest.co.uk, pinterest.de, pinterest.fr, pinterest.ca, pinterest.com.au, pinterest.es, pinterest.it, pinterest.jp and pinterest.com.mx are redirected to a matching country subdomain of pinterest.com, such as uk.pinterest.com, de.pinterest.com and fr.pinterest.com (checked on 11 October 2026). Pinterest can change this, so open the site once and read the address bar to see which hostname you end up on.

A hosts file or a Screen Time entry matches one hostname at a time, with no wildcards. Blocking www.pinterest.com alone leaves uk.pinterest.com and the other country hostnames open, so list the ones you actually use. Do not block shared image or content delivery domains: they serve pictures embedded on other sites.

HostnameWhat it is
pinterest.com, www.pinterest.comThe main site; pinterest.com redirects to www.pinterest.com
uk.pinterest.comWhere pinterest.co.uk sends you
de.pinterest.com, fr.pinterest.com, es.pinterest.com, it.pinterest.comWhere pinterest.de, pinterest.fr, pinterest.es and pinterest.it send you
ca.pinterest.com, au.pinterest.com, jp.pinterest.com, mx.pinterest.comWhere pinterest.ca, pinterest.com.au, pinterest.jp and pinterest.com.mx send you

Can you block Pinterest with Screen Time?

Yes. Screen Time is built into macOS and has a web content restriction with a Restricted list. It is aimed at Safari, so check other browsers after you set it up. Add each Pinterest hostname you use as its own entry.

Version note: Apple's guides for macOS 26 and macOS 27 give the same path for website restrictions. The macOS 27 Schedule and Time Allowances settings work on apps and app categories, so they are not how you block a single website.

  1. Click the Apple menu, open System Settings and click Screen Time in the sidebar. Turn it on if needed.

  2. Click Content & Privacy and turn it on.

  3. Open App Store, Media, Web & Games.

  4. Under Safari, choose Limit Adult Websites, then click Customize.

  5. Click the + button under the Restricted list, enter https://www.pinterest.com and click Done. Repeat for your country hostname, for example https://uk.pinterest.com.

  6. Open Pinterest in Safari to confirm it is blocked, and repeat in any other browser you use.

How do you block pinterest.com with the hosts file?

Point each Pinterest hostname at an address that goes nowhere. Add the main two and the country hostname for your region. Chrome reads the hosts file itself, and other browsers on this Mac that use the system resolver read it too. Safari follows it as well, unless iCloud Private Relay is on, because Safari then sends its requests through Apple's relays.

  • Swap uk for your own country (de, fr, ca, au, es, it, jp, mx) and the country domain to match. Add the country domain too, so it fails at once instead of redirecting.
  • To unblock, delete the lines, flush the cache again and restart the browser. It is a permanent block with no timer, and anyone who knows the trick can reverse it.
  1. Open Terminal and run:

    sudo nano /etc/hosts
  2. Enter your Mac password. Move to the bottom of the file and add the hostnames you use, for example:

    0.0.0.0 pinterest.com
    0.0.0.0 www.pinterest.com
    0.0.0.0 uk.pinterest.com
    0.0.0.0 pinterest.co.uk
    0.0.0.0 www.pinterest.co.uk
  3. Press Control-O, then Return to save, and Control-X to exit.

  4. Flush the DNS cache so the change applies now:

    sudo dscacheutil -flushcache
    sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
  5. Quit and reopen your browser, then open pinterest.com and your country domain and confirm neither loads.

Can your browser block Pinterest on its own?

Only partly, and only inside that one browser. Neither Safari nor Chrome has a built-in website blocklist for personal use. Safari relies on Screen Time. Chrome relies on extensions or system-level blocks such as the hosts file. An extension affects only the browser it is installed in.

Step-by-step options are in the Chrome guide and the Safari guide. For the general method, see how to block websites on a Mac.

How do you block Pinterest only during work sessions?

Use a focus app, so the block runs when you want it and not otherwise. Add pinterest.com to a Nudge preset and start the session from the menu bar. Nudge blocks the websites and apps you picked while the session runs, and websites are blocked in Safari and Chrome (and other Chromium browsers such as Arc, Brave and Edge).

  • Pinterest is blocked while you work and reachable after the session ends. Nudge costs $9.99 once for Lifetime Access, with no subscription, and every Mac gets a 7-day free trial that needs no email, password or card.
  • To compare other tools, read the best website blocker apps for Mac.
  1. Open Nudge and create a preset, such as Deep Work.

  2. Add pinterest.com to the websites to block. If you use a country version, open it during a session, for example uk.pinterest.com, to check it is blocked too.

  3. Start the preset from the menu bar, or use Quick Focus for a one-off session.

  4. Optional: add a schedule so the preset runs on the days and hours you choose.

What about the other social sites?

The same methods work for Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. For installed apps, read how to block apps on a Mac.
